The ad for 52 Chesterfield Rd, Epping, makes it clear this is no ordinary sale.

The Californian bungalow with a pretty facade is described as having had “a chequered history in more recent years”.

In November, more than a dozen police and the dog squad raided the property in response to neighbours’ fears that it had become a haunt for low-level criminals who were coming and going at all times of the day and night.

Suburb thrives on a new generation of buyers

Since the owner of the property died and her son inherited the house, petty crime has risen in the street regarded as a prestigious blue-chip address.

In recent years, properties in Chesterfield Rd have achieved prices in excess of $2.5 million. In 2017, a restored, renovated and extended bungalow at 61 Chesterfield Rd sold for $2.875 million while a similar property at no. 15 fetched $2.675 million.

Selling agent Kate Seehusen from NNW Property — Epping has been swamped by inquiries since the property was listed with a buyers guide of $1.05 million to $1.15 million.

In less than 24 hours she received 20 emails, 15 phone calls and issued nine contracts on the property.

She is obliged to explain to buyers that there has been alleged drug use at the property and local crime in the neighbourhood has risen in the past year since the owner of the property died and left it to her son.

Neighbours have called police to the property on numerous occasions amid fears it is being used as a parole address by some of the recent occupants.

The property has been frequented by low-level criminals.

Ms Seehusen said the first question from buyers was, “Why is the price guide so low?”

“It’s impossible to know what sort of price to pitch at because of the property’s history,” Ms Seehusen said.

“Some buyers don’t care about the history and others have their concerns.”

Ms Seehusen said it was the owner’s choice to sell the house.

The agent believes the right buyer will see the value in the property and overlook its recent chequered past.

“He has been prompted by a series of warnings from the local police but it was definitely his choice to sell,” she said.

The three-bedroom house on a 765sqm block has “superficial damage” including broken windows.

“It is a unique property,” Ms Seehusen said.

“The house is in desperate need of some TLC but it has good bones and the right buyer will be able to see that.”

The property goes to auction on Saturday, May 4.
